İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi İngilizce Yeterlilik Sınavı

İSTANBUL TİCARET ÜNİVERSİTESİ İNGİLİZCE YETERLİLİK   SINAVI

 www.istanbulticaretuniversitesi.gen.tr

Part 3: READING PASSAGES
87 – 100 Read the passages and mark the correct answer on your answer sheet according to
the information given in each.
Passage 1:
1
On a September day in 1991, two Germans were climbing the mountains between Austria and
Italy. High up on a mountain pass, they found the body of a man lying on the ice. At that height (3,200
meters), the ice is usually very hard – it does not melt completely. But 1991 was especially a warm
year. The mountain ice melted more than usual and so the body came to the surface.
2
The skeleton was in perfect condition, except for a large wound in the head. It was lying face
down. There was still skin on the bones and the remains of some clothes. His hands were still holding
a wooden tool. On the feet, there were very simple boots.
3
The mountain climbers who found the body said it looked thousands of years old. Other
people thought it might be from this century. Perhaps it was the body of a soldier who died in
World War I. In fact, several World War I soldiers had been found in that area of the mountains. On
the other hand, a Swiss woman believed it might be her father. He had died in those mountains and his
body had never been found.
4
When Italian and Austrian scientists heard about the discovery, they came to the mountaintop.
The body couldn’t be the Swiss woman’s father, they said. The boots, clothes and the tool were clearly
from further back in the past. For the same reason, they said it couldn’t be a World War I soldier. It
had to be at least five hundred years old.
5
Before they could be sure about this guess, the scientists needed more information. They
needed to bring the body down the mountain so they could study it in their laboratories. The body was
lying almost exactly on the border between Italy and Austria. Naturally, both countries wanted the
frozen man for their laboratories and their museums. For two days, the body lay there in the mountains
while diplomats argued. Finally, it was decided that the body lay on the Austrian ground. By that time,
the body was partly unfrozen and damaged.
6
When the Austrian scientists examined the body more closely, they changed their minds. They
did not know yet how he died, but they knew when: in about 2,700 B.C. This was a very important
discovery, they said. It might teach them a great deal about European history. From the clothes and the
tool they could learn about how men lived in those times.
Mark the best choice according to the information given in the text. Mark your answers on the
answer sheet.

Passage 2:
1
Denmark is an agricultural country. In Copenhagen, the largest and busiest city in all
Scandinavia, (although Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries), we find people who
make it very clear that the Danish are really farmers. Here is an example; a man from Copenhagen
once said: “Do you know that a man from this city advertised in the newspaper for a wife and wanted
her to own a tractor. In his advertisement, he wrote: ‘When answering, please send a picture of the
tractor!’ “
2
Copenhagen was established in 1167. There are many fountains and parks in Copenhagen and
each one seems to be the subject of a story like “Cinderella” or “Hansel and Gretel”. Yellow buses,
thousands of flowers, postmen in red coats and the bright green roofs on the buildings add color to the
city. Danish people all ride bicycles, so where England has car parks, Copenhagen has bicycle parks.
Because the country is almost completely flat – unlike England which has hills, in Denmark riding a
bicycle is easy.
3
Besides these differences, we noticed that many people in Copenhagen could speak almost
perfect English, and it was sometimes difficult to remember that it was not a British city. When we
went shopping, very nice and polite shop assistants gave us advice in English as naturally as if it was
their own language. We met about fifty Danes and only one could not talk to us in English.
4
“We have no bad houses,” we were told. “And you will never see a dirty garden in Denmark.
Nobody is very poor; on the other hand, nobody is very rich either.”
Mark the best choice according to the information given in the text. Mark your answers on the
answer sheet.

The man who advertised in the newspaper wanted _______.
a) to see the picture of the tractor before he bought it
b) to buy a wife instead of a tractor
c) the tractor to reply with a picture
d) the woman who he would marry to own a tractor
98.
Copenhagen looks like a town in “Cinderella” or Hansel and Gretel” because it is ________.
a) colorful
b) busy
c) noisy
d) crowded
99.
According to the information given in the text, one of the differences between England and
Denmark is that ___________.
a) Danish people can speak English very well
b) in Copenhagen, you usually feel that you are in an English city
c) there are almost no hills in Denmark
d) riding a bicycle in Denmark is very difficult
100. From the passage we learn that _________.
a) in Denmark, there are stories about postman in red coats
b) all shop assistants in Denmark come from England
c) the bright green roofs on the buildings add to the beauty of Copenhagen
